Decision making involves a choice among two or more alternatives. If we are fortunate enough, it comes easily and naturally to us. At times, it may suf ce to rely on our own intuition, or a simple hunch, to arrive at a good decision. At other times, decision making is dif cult and may require a more thoughtful and deliberate consideration of the different issues involved. (Unfortunately, sometimes we are forced to make a quick decision, which precludes us from performing a careful analysis of a situation.) In this section, we discuss how decision makers can employ diagrams to aid in the decision-making task, especially when the decision is dif cult and complex. Why is decision making sometimes so hard There are a number of reasons why it may be dif cult to come to the right decision. First, a decision may be so complex that it is dif cult to keep all the issues straight at one time. We may not have a clear understanding of the myriad issues involved: the alternative courses of action, the possible outcomes of the decision, the values and objectives of the different stakeholders who may be affected by the decision, and the long-term
