played games as if the blocks of wood were a large fortress or as if we were the mommy or daddy. As adolescents we imagined ourselves in famous roles of industry and in uence. Ultimately the physicality of childhood was replaced by the physical reality of our environment and regaled to an unconscious level of hopes, dreams, and wishes. From the artwork we choose to display on our walls to the collectibles in our professional and private corners, we communicate indirect messages about our personal myth. If we return to Figure 3.12, this client s rst drawing of the 8CRT was of Spiderman; however, this was not the rst time he had spontaneously rendered Spiderman. In the Spiderman comic book series, Peter Parker, an orphaned, nondescript Charlie Brown type of character, is transformed into a hero after an unusual spider bite. In a youthful act of de ance he allows a burglar to escape, but the same criminal eventually robs his own home and ultimately kills his uncle (Peter s father gure). From this point forward he focuses his powers on the betterment of the community. However, his archenemy The Green Goblin is his best friend s father, who, after being transformed through a premature scienti c experiment, is now psychotic. Thus, the repetitious father theme coupled with the battling of a psychotic nemesis becomes a metaphor for our client s internal struggles. By the sixth drawing of the 8CRT, another comic book gure, the Incredible Hulk, makes an appearance a signi cant departure from the prior theme, and one that calls for discussion. The back story for Bruce Banner (the Hulk) begins with his grandfather, who meted out severe psychological abuse toward Bruce s father, Brian Banner. Consequently, Brian looked upon his father as a monster. Fearing that he had inherited a monster gene, Brian was determined to have no children. After an evening of excessive drinking, he returned to his laboratory and accidentally released an overload of gamma radiation, which in time brought to the forefront his repressed feelings of rage and anger (recall the client s excessive drinking and subsequent molestation of his daughter). Meanwhile, he fell in love, married, and had a son, Bruce. As time moved on, his repressed feelings turned him into that which he despised, an abusive husband and father. He was sent to a mental institution while his only son withdrew into his own world. At this juncture, Bruce Banner began to exhibit symptoms of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) with a myriad of personas ranging from the Incredible Hulk to Guilt Hulk (brought out only after a doctor attempted to cure Bruce of his MPD diagnosis). In time the father was discharged from the hospital, and ultimately Bruce kills him in a t of anger (Yarish, 2002). In both comic books, signi cant issues arise from the protagonists rela166

sense, the electron has anyway a nite probability of location beyond the barrier. This nite relocation probability is quantum mechanical tunnelling. Tunnelling is either elastic or inelastic, depending upon whether energy is preserved or lost as a result of the tunnelling process respectively. The kinetics of tunnelling in relationship to biological electron transfer processes will be discussed in 8, so only rudimentary concepts relevant to STM will be mentioned here. In STM, the tunnelling barrier is in fact a three-dimensional potential barrier of arbitrary shape; however, the basic principles do not differ substantially from tunnelling through a uniform unidimensional barrier (Figure 6.27). The Schr dinger equation o for electron tunnelling through such a simple barrier is given by the following: h2 d2 3 = E T 3 2me dz 2 (6.14)

When you point to the cell or range, Excel automatically takes care of the details and creates a syntactically correct external reference. When using this method, the cell reference is always an absolute reference (such as $A$1). If you plan to copy the formula to create additional link formulas, you need to change the absolute reference to a relative reference by removing the dollar signs for the cell address. As long as the source workbook remains open, the external reference doesn t include the path to the workbook. If you close the source workbook, however, the external reference formulas change to include the full path.

Now that your home page is beginning to attract some eyeballs with its graphic look, it is time to throw in some content to get the message across. Text from a client comes in many forms: from the headings and paragraphs of a marketing brochure to bulleted copy points written especially for the Web, and everything in between. Your job as a Web designer is to make it all flow together in a logical, attractive, understandable fashion. Many print designers coming to the Internet are appalled at the lack of typographic control on the Web. Particular fonts are, for the most part, suggested, rather than specified, with alternatives always available. Sizes are often relative, and line spacing outside of Cascading Style Sheets is nonexistent. A typical first response is to render blocks of text into graphics to achieve exactly the look desired. In a word, don t. Graphics, unlike text, aren t searchable, and displaying text as graphics defeats much of the purpose of the Web. Moreover, large blocks of graphics can take a long time to download. It s far better to learn the ins and outs of CSS; it s truly an option now and gives the Web designer almost as much control as the print designer. To facilitate including client-generated text in my Web page designs, I often work with my word processing program and Dreamweaver open simultaneously. This arrangement enables me to quickly cut and paste text from one to the other.

1. Click the Select tool. 2. Select all of the assets that will be converted to a custom component. You can press and hold the Shift key to select multiple items. If all of the assets to be converted are in the same layer, you can simply select the layer in the Layers panel to select all of the items on that layer. In this case, click the Home State layer (see Figure 22.1).
