Running the Close Open Line Segments and Make Faces scripts can take time. The more edges you select, the longer it will take the script to process. A deep analysis of network-level optimization process might need a complete separate book, if we want to cover several radio technologies. Therefore, this section tries to summarize the main concepts to be taken into account when optimizing a network from the service performance point of view, without going into the details of each particular technology. If we wonder what the final goal of the network optimization process is, we could think about three different dimensions, from a network operator s perspective. 1. Optimize operational efficiency: Automating most time-consuming tasks, performing parameter and dimensioning optimization automatically and regularly (minimizing the OPEX). 2. Cost reduction: Minimizing the CAPEX to support current or forecasted traffic, reusing as maximum the current infrastructure. 3. Quality improvement: Enhancing the network quality with minimum investments. Both, from the viewpoint of the network performance and also from the users. This section is focused on the third dimension (i.e. quality improvement), which is the one that mostly affect the end-user performance. The first and second dimensions are more related to operator s perspective and would need a separate treatment, although some hints have already been introduced in 7. As already described in 5, the main KPIs at network level that affect the service performance are throughput and latency. But few other network indicators are also important to optimize the quality, such as jitter (or delay variation), Bit Error Rate (BER) and outage time. Note that these indicators are some times related to each other in a way that the improvement of one of them may also improve the other. As an example, let us consider a decrease in the BER, which leads to less number of retransmissions at radio level and consequently to a lower jitter and higher effective throughput. The optimization of the network is not an easy task, since every element or interface may be a quality bottleneck of some kind. However, some general recommendations to achieve an optimum network performance are proposed below.
