FileMaker Pro scripts are created in ScriptMaker. The commands used in the script are called steps or script steps. In many cases, the steps duplicate FileMaker Pro menu commands. (See the Script Step Reference section, later in this chapter, for information about specific steps.) As you read through this chapter, however, you will learn that script steps are often more powerful than the menu commands they represent. For example, you can use a Clear script step that makes a particular field the active one, selects the entire contents of that field, and then clears its contents. To clear a field without such a script, you must click the field and then manually select its contents (or use the Select All command) before choosing the Clear menu command. Thus, multiple steps can frequently be combined into one. The real power of FileMaker Pro scripts becomes apparent when you design a sequence of steps to carry out a complex function. With a script, you can be sure that the steps are executed in precisely the same manner each time. If you prefer, the same script can be designed so that the user can select different options each time it runs. For example, you could create a Find script that selects a particular group of records (such as all people in the database who are younger than 30) and then displays information about those records in a different layout. With only a minor modification, the same script can be designed so that the Find criteria can be changed by the user each time the script is performed. Similarly, a script designed to act on a specific field can be modified so it simply acts on whatever field happens to be current. In that way, the script can be used with any field in the database.

Opening raw files from Bridge or Photoshop is straightforward: You can use the commands on the File menu or the contextual menu. However, you do have a choice of whether you want Bridge or Photoshop to host Camera Raw. This can make a lot of difference to your workflow. To give some examples, if you open a raw via Photoshop first, you can then open another raw via Bridge. While you edit a raw via Photoshop, Bridge can be busy creating a cache for files that you have just downloaded from your digital camera. Conversely, while Photoshop is busy creating a Web Photo Gallery, you can process raws via Bridge at the same time. To open a raw and have Bridge host Camera Raw, select a thumbnail and then choose Open in Camera Raw from the Bridge File menu, or Ctrl+R (Windows), +R (Mac OS). If you have the option Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Setting in Bridge set in Preferences, you can, of course, double-click a thumbnail or a preview to open the file. To open a raw and have Photoshop host Camera Raw, select a thumbnail and then choose Open from the Photoshop File menu, or select a thumbnail in Bridge and then Ctrl+O (Windows), +O (Mac OS). Alternatively, in Bridge, select the file s thumbnail and then from the contextual menu choose Photoshop CS from the Open With submenu (this method also works with the preview). You can also drag a thumbnail to a Photoshop shortcut (Windows) or alias (Mac OS). If the focus is on a thumbnail, you can also press Enter (Windows), Return (Mac OS). To open a raw from Bridge, have Photoshop host Camera Raw, and minimize Bridge at the same time, select a thumbnail and then press Alt+Enter (Windows), Opt+Return (Mac OS). Saving raw files from Camera Raw can be done in one of two ways: You can either open the processed file into Photoshop, apply adjustments to it, and then save it in any of the supported formats, or you can save it straight out of Camera Raw by clicking the Save button. If you choose the latter route, you can save in one of the four supported file formats: Digital Negative (DNG), JPEG, TIFF, or Photoshop (PSD). The Save Options dialog box also lets you rename the file, using batch renaming options and options for each file format (Figure 14-6). The following list contains some of the advantages of converting raw files to DNG from the outset and including such a step in your workflow: Depending on the choices you make in the DNG converter dialog box, you can decrease the file size by as much as half without any data loss. For example, 12MB raw files from a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro are reduced to just 5.8MB. This can help to conserve space on CDs and DVDs when you create archives.
