One of the earliest attempts to quantify coalescence frequencies was the work of Howarth (1967). A procedure was used that is similar to the one described in Section 12-3.1.5. A steady dispersion was established at a high agitation rate. The stirrer speed was then lowered so that only coalescence occurred, at least initially. Howarth de ned a global or macroscopic coalescence frequency as the initial slope of a plot of interfacial area (related to d32 ) versus time and demonstrated that systematic experiments could be conducted to determine the effect of various system variables on coalescence rate. Since the coalescence frequency depends strongly on drop diameter, most models are based on the approach discussed below. The coalescence frequency, (d, d ), is the product of the collision frequency, (d, d ), and coalescence probability, (d, d ), as shown by eq. (12-35). A schematic diagram illustrating how models for (d, d ) are developed for owdriven collisions is given in Figure 12-20. The diagram follows the overview given by Chesters (1991). From a hydrodynamic viewpoint, two separate models are developed. The model for the external ow surrounding the drops produces the collision frequency, (d, d ), approach force, F, and contact time, tc . This model can be for laminar or turbulent ow, depending on the contacting equipment and process variables. The model for the internal ow yields the lm drainage time. This model is that for a squeezing ow, driven by F and constrained by tc of the external model. Given the dimensions of the draining lm, this is a viscous model, usually assumed to be a lubrication ow. The coalescence ef ciency is determined by comparing the time to reach critical thickness with the available contact time determined by the external ow model. Each additional column you add to the Criteria Range specifies an additional AND criteria. Each additional row you add to the Criteria Range specifies an additional inclusive OR criteria. The easiest way to interpret the Criteria Range is to think of the AND criteria running horizontally across and the inclusive OR criteria running vertically down the Criteria Range. The filtering action happens when you select Advanced Filter from the Excel menu. The List Range is the range of data that you normally would be filtering if you were using an AutoFilter. In this example, the List Range happens to comprise the cells A16:K67. When you run the Advanced Filter routine, you need to first select the List Range or select a cell in the first row of the List Range. In this example, it suffices to click the cell A16 before running the Advanced Filter.
