Immune Function Studies linking social support to immune function indices suggest that higher social support is associated with better immune system function. Levy and colleagues (1990) examined the association between perceived emotional support from spouse, family member, friends, doctors, and nurses and the immune system function in women with breast cancer. The results indicated that emotional support from spouse and physician was associated with greater natural killer cell activity (NKCA). Some studies have controlled for the in uence of other psychological factors, such as mood and stressful life events, that could contribute to the association between support and immune function. Baron and colleagues (Baron, Cutrona, Hicklin, Russell, & Lubaroff, 1990) evaluated the association between perceived support and immune indexes among spouses of cancer patients and found that all aspects of support were related to phytoheammagluttinin (PHA) and NKCA, even after controlling for life events and depression. The preceding chapters concentrated on developing a general but solid understanding of accounting principles and concepts and their applications to business transactions. To express the relationship between two values, various commonly used ratios are illustrated. Four general methods of evaluating a ratio or percentage will be discussed: industry figures, external competitive figures, the results of operations from a previous period, and predetermined budgetary standards. Typical ratio analysis techniques commonly used by a business to express the status of its operations, financial, and economic condition, are broken into five major categories: current liquidity ratios, long-term solvency ratios, profitability ratios, activity, and operating ratios.

He received BS and MS degrees in Physics from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 2001, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of A Coruna in 2003. He is a member of the Integrated Group for Engineering Research at the University of A Coruna. Current research activities are related to evolutionary algorithms applied to arti cial neural networks, multiagent systems, and robotics. Richard J. Duro received an MS in Physics from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in 1989, and a PhD in Physics from the same university in 1992. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and head of the Integrated Group for Engineering Research at the University of La Coruna. His research interests include higher-order neural network structures, signal processing, and autonomous and evolutionary robotics. He is a senior member of the IEEE.
