While costs are theoretically contained in managed-care models, freedom of choice for both patient and provider is strictly controlled. A recent survey of over 42,000 Consumer Reports leaders found lukewarm satisfaction with their managed health care plans with an overall satisfaction score of 73 (out of 100) representing less satisfaction than compared to their other insurance policies such as home and car (Consumer Reports, 2003). These survey results have raised concerns about the quality of service provided by managed health care. Managed care companies now routinely survey their members concerning client satisfaction (Broskowski, 1995). The need for accountability has also resulted in the requirement that managed-care organizations routinely report information on 9 quality of care indicators, over 60 usage indicators, measures of access to care and member satisfaction, and over 12 indicators of financial performance (Broskowski, 1995 p. 160). This information is part of what is called the HEDIS Report (Corrigan & Nielson, 1993). Psychologists and other mental health professionals tend to be unhappy with managed health care (Anders, 1996; Davenport & Woolley, 1997; R. Fox, 1994; Fraser, 1996; Karon, 1995; M. Murphy, DeBernardo, & Shoemaker, 1998; R. Newman & Taylor, 1996; Phelps, 1996; Phelps, Eisman, & Kohout, 1998; Saeman, 1996a, 1996b) and have even formed special interest groups to curtail its impact and abuses (e.g., the National Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and Consumers). A survey of over 14,000 members of the APA revealed that 78% of the group felt that managed care had a negative impact on their professional work, with only 10.4% reporting a positive impact (Phelps, 1996). A survey of over 200 diplomates in clinical psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology revealed that over 90% felt that managed health care was a negative and problematic trend (Plante, pdf417 java use j2se pdf-417 2d barcode generation to encode pdf-417 2d barcode on java formula KeepDynamic.com/pdf417generate, create uss code 39 dimensional none on word microsoft projects KeepDynamic.com/3 of 9 barcode |
