The various signals available, or soon to be available in the near future, have been described in s 3 and 6. The goal of this section is to illustrate the internal way the signal is constructed at the satellite end. As the aim is to describe the principles, GPS will be given as an example, for the three signals L1 C/A, L1 P, and L2 P. The rst step is the generation of the P code (Fig. 7.2), which will be used for synchronization purposes for all the code generation. The second step (Fig. 7.3) consists of taking out a characteristic event of the P code, the X1 event, in order to achieve the global synchronization of all codes generated by the satellite. The code generation is also synchronized to the local atomic-clock-driven oscillator. Thus, the P code is generated (Fig. 7.4). Both the X1 event and the oscillator are used in order to provide, through a divide by ten function, the Gold codes at the chip rate of 1.023 MHz that is required for the C/A code. It appears clearly that both P and C/A codes are thus perfectly synchronized. Furthermore, as will be described in the next paragraph, it appears that codes generated on the two frequencies are also perfectly synchronized at the transmitter end. This is of primary concern when dealing with dual-frequency ionosphere propagation, as a dualfrequency path is required that exhibits both the same transmitting location and the same transmitting time. See Fig. 7.5 for a diagrammatic representation. Going a little further than just the codes, let us now shift to another important feature of GNSS: the navigation data. As previously described, the data rate is 50 Hz and there is a strong need for synchronization with the ranging codes for acquisition and tracking optimization. Figure 7.6 shows the way this new frequency is created from the C/A code and the so-called G event (the speci c con guration of the C/A code that repeats every second).
