Counselors, nurses, psychiatrists, peer helpers, and others are involved with the areas of concern already listed. Clinical psychologists have a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university or professional school providing an organized, sequential clinical psychology program in a department of psychology (APA, 1981, p. 641). Although many universities offer master s degree training programs in clinical psychology, the doctorate is considered to be the minimal level of training to be considered a clinical psychologist. Clinical psychology is not so much a specialty separate from psychology, but is more a unique application of psychology to the realm of emotional and behavioral problems (Matarazzo, 1987).

THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN PSYCHOLOGY International communication among psychologists has been important to the development of modern psychology. Communication has ourished through world congresses, scholarly exchanges, and perhaps most importantly the establishment of ongoing international organizations. While the chapter by Raymond Fowler and Wade Pickren ( 26) details this development, it is important to highlight here three major international organizations that have played key roles. The oldest international organization of psychologists is the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP). The IAAP was founded in 1920 at the rst International Congress of Applied Psychology, convened by E. Clapar de in Geneva. The International Council of Psychologists (ICP) traces its roots to the National Council of Women Psychologists, established in New York City in 1941 by a group of U.S. women psychologists who
