The Add/Remove Applications tool is a great feature in Ubuntu, but it has its limitations. It adds and removes only workstation application software packages. The Ubuntu distribution includes many more packages for server programs, utilities, drivers, and code libraries that cannot be managed by the Add/Remove Applications tool. Fortunately, Ubuntu also includes a program for handling the details of package management the Synaptic Package Manager. This section describes how to use the Synaptic Package Manager to install and remove individual packages on your Ubuntu workstation.

They are designated on the servers as SC0 and SC1 and contain two Ethernet network connections (for redundancy) as well as a serial port connection (to provide console access). The SC board itself consists of additional ASICs that provide the same type of services as those listed in the previous paragraph. The SCs on all of these servers provide a console connection to all of the domains as well as a communication path to all of the hardware in the server. This allows you to gather the status of a specific board or component even if it is not in use or if the primary data bus has failed in a domain. It also allows you to test various components without having a running domain or to test them while the domain is running using the dynamic reconfiguration technology. On the high-end Sun Fire servers, this concept goes a step further through the provision a private network for all the domains that is maintained by the SCs. These private networks are called management networks (MANs). (There are no MANs on the lowend or midrange servers).
