Radiated immunity. The relative ability of a product to withstand electromagnetic energy that arrives via free-space propagation. Radiated susceptibility. Undesired propagating electromagnetic fields radiating through free space into equipment from external electromagnetic sources. Radio frequency (RF). The frequency range containing coherent electromagnetic radiation of energy; roughly 10 kHz 300 GHz used for communication purposes. This energy may be transmitted as a byproduct of an electronic device s undesired mode of operation. The RF energy is transmitted through two basic modes: radiated and conductive. Reflections. Shield ground. Providing a 0-V reference or electromagnetic shield for both interconnect cables or main chassis housings. Shield room. A room containing metal walls. Used for EMI analysis. Signal analyzer. A system that is a combination of an oscilloscope and a spectrum analyzer. It displays signals in both the time and frequency domain. Signal integrity. The engineering discipline that investigates the propagating quality of a signal (electromagnetic field) to ensure that minimal energy loss occurs and that the desired waveform arrives at its destination within a desired period of time without degradation, ringing, reflection, and crosstalk. Single-point ground. A method of referencing many circuits together to a single location to allow communication to occur. Skin depth. The distance to the point inside a conductor at which the electromagnetic field, and hence current, is reduced to 37% of the surface value.

desirable if the Wi-Fi device could employ some form of dynamic power management. When the client is close to an AP and the signal is strong, it does not need as much power as when it is in a poor coverage area. Alternatively, in certain applications, it is possible to remove or bypass the RF system's PA altogether. Doing so not only reduces transmitting power consumption, but also limits the supported data rate to 1 or 2 Mbit/s. Research conducted by TI points to an interesting factor in determining the power consumption in Wi-Fi devices. It is logical to assume that higher data rates will result in higher power consumption, because higher transmitting power is needed to overcome interference and maintain the same range than with lower data rates. TI points out however, that the transmit duration, not the transmitting power, is the decisive factor. Interestingly, transmitting or receiving at speeds of 11 Mbit/s or greater requires less power than at slower rates for a given amount of data. In addition, lowering the output power by removing or bypassing the PA (and reducing the range) has a measurable, but not significant, effect on the power consumed. Thus, embedded designs will incur only a small penalty in battery life by using a full-power, full-range radio. An examination of the power budget for a PDA with 802.11 reveals that the incremental power consumption and the resulting battery life are quite reasonable. Based on simulation results of a Wi-Fi enabled PDA, TI estimated that more than 80 percent of the time, the Wi-Fi-enabled handheld was in a sleep or standby mode. The handheld spent the remaining 20 percent of the time in transmit or receive mode, which can be optimized with a higher data rate. Assuming the use of a 3,600-mW-hour Li-ion battery (1,000 mA hours) and an average daily power consumption of 105 mW hours, TI obtained a baseline battery life of about 34 days. With such results, adding Wi-Fi capability increases the power budget to approximately 140 mW hours per day. This provides an expected battery life of more than 25 days, a net reduction in power consumption of 25 percent, which makes it very reasonable for enabling wireless LAN connectivity.
The Pen Options tab enables you to configure what different pen actions and Tablet PC buttons do. For example, by default, a single-tap is the equivalent of a single-click with a mouse button, whereas a double-tap, naturally, emulates a mouse double-click. You can also configure press and hold (right-click by default, although some Tablet PC styli actually include a dedicated pen button that acts as a right-click button in conjunction with a tap) and the Start Tablet PC Input Panel button, which is found on some Tablet PCs. In the Flicks tab, shown in Figure 18-12, you can configure various options related to Flicks, which are discussed later in the chapter. Flicks were one of the major new features in the Windows Vista version of the Tablet PC software, and they ve been enhanced in Windows 7 to support touch controls. So hang around we ll get to that too. In the Handwriting tab, shown in Figure 18-13, you configure a tool called Automatic Learning that helps you personalize the system s handwriting recognition. Automatic learning is enabled by default it was an opt-in service in Windows Vista and it gathers information about the words you use regularly and how you write them, and then skews the system s handwriting recognition so that it can be more accurate and attuned to both your writing style and word usage.
