If we want to evaluate semantic methods, we rst have to establish a clear reference point for comparison, or some kind of unit in terms of which we can measure the quality of new ways of doing things. In the present case, the reference point is the usual web way of gathering information: keyword search and hyperlink-based browsing. This provides the yard stick with which we can measure how good novel semantic approaches are. Here, we consider two different semantic web-style information modes: (i) ontology-based search; (ii) ontology-based browsing. We provide some examples of both these semantic information modes later.

SIMULATION VERSUS EXPERIMENT For higher incident energies, typical simulated spectral distributions for Al (4 mm thickness) and Cu (10 mm thickness) samples, irradiated with a high-energy monochromatic beam of linearly polarized X-rays, are shown in Figure 6.1.8. These spectral distributions were collected at the highenergy scattering beamline BW5 of HASYLAB (Hamburg, Germany) (Schneider, 1995). Here the energy distribution of the scattered synchrotron beam is compared with the simulated equivalent in the case of the two sample matrices. The energy of the incident beam is 80 keV and the degree of linear polarization is estimated to be 90 91 % (Vincze, 1999b). The gure also shows the individually calculated contributions of the various scattering orders, i.e. the spectral components which are generated by single, double and higher order multiple scattering. The calculation was done up to the 6th scattering order for Al and the 4th for Cu, above which the contribution of multiple scattering is negligible to the total scattered distribution. By summing up these scattering orders one obtains the full spectral response of the irradiated sample which can be compared directly with experimental data. The residual values (Figure 6.1.9) derived from the simulated and experimental data show deviations which are in general below the statistical uncertainties of the experimental spectrum in the multiple Compton scatter region of 45 65 keV. In Figure 6.1.9, the statistical uncertainties are indicated as dashed curves, corresponding to 3 con dence limits. In these gures, is the relative standard deviation per channel content. In the region of the primary/multiple Compton scattering the agreement between simulation and experiment is considered to be satisfactory in view of the uncertainties of the individual physical constants involved in the calculations, the uncertainties of the degree of polarization of the primary beam and that of the angles involved in the excitation/detection geometry. In Figure 6.1.8(b), next to the contribution of Rayleigh and Compton scattering, the Cu K lines can also be observed at 8.05 and 8.90 keV. The ratio of these uorescent lines to the scatter peaks is correctly calculated by the simulation

In its simplest form, ASP.NET is a new technology available with the .NET Framework that allows you to build Web Forms and Web Services. ASP.NET contains a collection of controls that you can program. Although it contains a collection of built-in controls, it enables you to develop your own controls. ASP.NET allows you to develop Web-based applications in the same manner as a Visual Basic .NET Windows Form. This new technology also has some outstanding new features that were not available in classic ASP such as ways to manage state as well as numerous options that are available in the configuration of your applications. In programming these controls, you can currently use VB .NET, C#, or JScript. All these languages offer you more control than VBScript ever did.
