The security subsystem in Windows 2000 is an integral part of directory services as logon and object access functions are provided through the directory with a little help from the Global Catalog. The security subsystem is home to several Active Directory components, including the LSA and related dynamic link libraries (DLLs), which function together to provide access to resources throughout. The following section describes the LSA and its subcomponents. See Figure 2.2 for a schematic of the Windows 2000 subsystem.

Next-Generation (NexGen) convergence goes beyond the local loop alternatives of CATV, telco UTP and PON, WLL, and Access BPL. NexGen convergence also goes beyond the core network alternatives of the circuit-switched PSTN, the Internet, and private IP networks. NexGen convergence folds 2.5 G and 3 G cellular networks into the mix. Such a converged network is more than a gleam in some engineer s eye or a spark in some marketer s mind; it is taking form through the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectural concept. IMS originated in the 3rd-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which was seeking a common means by which GSM cellular operators could deliver data services. IMS subsequently transcended the cellular domain and is now being embraced by both wireless and wireline service providers. Industry groups such as the Multiservice Switching Forum (MSF), European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) have adopted IMS as the foundation for their next-generation infrastructure strategies. In the pre-IMS world, the PSTN and the Internet are very different, as we have discussed. The circuit-switched PSTN conforms to an architecture that centralizes the intelligence in the network. The Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) places each service in an intelligent node and shares applications and communicates instructions to less intelligent switching platforms through Signaling System 7 (SS7). PSTN terminal devices are dumb. The packet-switched Internet distributes intelligence among clients and servers in support of peer-to-peer communications. Internet signaling and control are through the TCP/IP stack, with movement toward the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for applications such as VoIP. The cellular networks generally are circuit switched in nature and conform to the PSTN model of centralized intelligence and dumb terminals, with SS7 signaling and control. IMS is built around a packet core and provides an environment in which a user can access a wide range of multimedia services using any device and any type of network connection. IMS supports IP sessions between devices over any type of connection and protocol, whether wireline (e.g., ADSL, PON, CATV, or Ethernet) or wireless [e.g., 802,11a/b/g/n, GSM, EDGE, EV-DO, CDMA, GPRS, or WiMAX] in nature. IMS will support sessions between devices in the PSTN, Internet, and

Figure 10.14 shows the results of starting with the new blank design table. You may notice that the window title bar at the top says SolidWorks, but the toolbars look a lot like the Excel interface. This is because Excel is actually running inside of SolidWorks. Clicking outside of the Excel window can cause the Excel window to close, although there are several items outside of the Excel window that you can select without the window closing, such as features in the FeatureManager and dimensions in the graphics window. You can also rotate and pan the view in the graphics window without closing the Design Table window. If you are very careful, you can also drag the thin hatched border of the Excel window to adjust its size or location. Design Tables also can be edited in a separate window, which makes editing easier, but makes adding dimension and feature names more difficult. To edit the table in its own window, RMB on the Design Table in the FeatureManager and select Edit Table In New Window.

Fig. 6.33 results of a sequence of moves. In this puzzle, posed by Guarini in 1512 and illustrated in Fig. 6.32, the object is to make the black and white knights exchange places, in as few moves as possible. Not difficult, but it becomes trivial if the eight squares which the knights can possibly occupy are strung out in a circle, as in Fig. 6.33. The original knight's moves, which require a careful act of perception to follow in sequence, are reduced to trivial steps round a circle. The solution is now so clear that it is no longer a puzzle. Rather more complicated puzzles can be clarified in a similar manner. The reader probably remembers the Rubik's cube mania. Not long after the craze started, variants appeared, trying to cash in on its success. One variant consisted of three rings of small spheres, each of which could be rotated, which was perhaps invented by thinking of just three adjacent faces of Rubik's cube, around one
The Trim Surface feature is described briefly earlier in this chapter, but it warrants a more complete description here. Surfaces can be trimmed by three different types of entities: n Sketches n Planes n Other surfaces When you use surface bodies to trim one another, you must select one of two options: Standard or Mutual Trim. The Standard option causes one surface to act as the Trim tool and the other surface to be trimmed by the Trim tool. When you select the Mutual Trim option, both surfaces act as the Trim tool, and both surfaces are trimmed. For an example of trimmed surfaces, open the mouse example from 26 and step through the tree. This shows examples of a couple of types of trimmed surfaces, as well as extended surfaces and others.
