At the most basic level, frequency division is the starting point for all wireless communications because all communications within a given cell must be separated by frequency to avoid their mutual interference. Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) divides the assigned frequency range into multiple frequency channels to support multiple conversations, as depicted in Figure 11.3. In other words, multiple narrowband frequency channels derive from a wider band of assigned radio spectrum, much as frequency division multiplexers (FDMs) operate in the wired world. Multiple incoming and outgoing calls contend for access to those channels. A given call takes place on one pair of frequencies, with one transmission in the forward direction and another for transmission in the reverse direction. At the same time, another call takes place on another pair of frequencies. The forward and reverse channels in each frequency pair are separated in frequency in order to avoid cochannel interference. The forward channels are separated from each other, as are the reverse channels, in order to minimize the potential for crosstalk. The station equipment must be frequency agile in order to search for and seize an available frequency channel, especially as the mobile transmitter/receiver moves from one cell to another in a cellular network. Analog cellular systems employ FDMA. Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS), for example, provides for a total allocation of 40 MHz, which is divided into 666 (832 in some areas) frequency pairs. In each of the 734 serving areas de ned by the FCC, the available 666 (or 832) channels initially were split equally between wireline (i.e., Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, or ILEC) and nonwireline operators, with the carrier in each category initially having been determined on a lottery basis. AMPS separates the 30-kHz forward channel and the 30-kHz reverse channel in each frequency pair by approximately 55 MHz. On average, AMPS cell sites in

Modelling primitives and their semantics are one aspect of an ontology language, but we still have to decide about its syntax. Given the web s current dominance and importance, we must formulate a syntax of an ontology exchange language with existing web standards for information representation. First, OIL has a well-de ned syntax in XML based on a DTD and an XML Schema de nition. Second, OIL is an extension of RDF and RDFS. With regard to ontologies, RDFS provides two important contributions: a standardized syntax for writing ontologies and a standard set of modelling primitives such as instance-of and subclass-of relationships. OIL s relation to XML and RDF(S) is discussed in Section 2.5.

Other icons appear when needed or are installed by third-party applications. For example, Windows Home Server and many security applications install notification icons. Like a certain demonic creature, the notification area goes by many names. If you see references to such things as the system tray or the tray notification area, these are referring to the same place in the Windows 7 UI: what s now simply called the notification area.
To be fair, this is a complicated query and probably more excessive than will typically be used. Really, you can get most of your data with two LEFT JOIN clauses, eliminating the need to tap into the term_taxonomy table that defines types of taxonomy. In summary though, this query fetches all posts from WordPress that do not have a tag (post_tag) with ID 15. The query needs to be able to look at the term_taxonomy table to find only the tags on the post, and it needs to look at the terms table to get the ID of the tag itself. By default, the WordPress query is not going to make any effort to eliminate the posts that have the Food tag. The query that is sent will be much simpler than this. Clearly, you need to modify this query but in such a way that won t introduce security problems or break the way WordPress functions. You ll do this with a number of the query hooks and functions. First you ll create a new function in the plugin file for the JOIN clauses. Assume that WordPress or a plugin that is active is already supplying the query with a JOIN statement of some type and so you probably don t want to change that behavior. The function can use the posts_join_paged filter to add your own JOINs, as shown in Listing 8.4.
