The inclusion of an originating telephone number for inbound calls provides the most complete incoming call detail. This level of detail requires that the incoming PBX trunks support either Automatic Number Identi cation (ANI) or Calling Line Identi cation (CLID), services that carry additional charges from the service provider unless the trunks are ISDN. ANI requires a trunk-side connection, also known as Feature Group D, which makes the PBX trunk appear to the network as an internal InterMachine Trunk (IMT). When so equipped, the PBX trunk receives the same originating call information that is passed internally within the carrier networks for telephone company billing and tracking purposes. Signi cantly, the calling party cannot block ANI information. CLID, a feature of Signaling System 7 (SS7), is designed to provide essentially the same information, although the caller can block its transmission. Also, it is possible to spoof the CLID information with the proper (or improper) equipment. CLID spoo ng is quite easily accomplished in IP telephony, as the header in the call setup packet can be modi ed much as one might manipulate an e-mail address. The only advantage to spoo ng, of course, is in deception for illicit purposes or perhaps preserving anonymity in certain sensitive situations. Many contemporary PBXs contain adjunct software that allows the generation of a number of reports, including usage costs by cost center (e.g., station, account code, workgroup, department, and division). This critical feature assists in cost control and fraud control as well as permitting costs to bill to clients or projects. As such software generally is limited in its capability, most users prefer to acquire more substantial telemanagement software residing on an adjunct computer connected to
