A scalable directory. Active Directory serves as the source of information for Windows 2000, and it grows as an organization grows. Windows 2000 introduces the concept of partitions that allow a Windows 2000 network to scale to enormous proportions while still maintaining manageability. These partitions are sections of the Active Directory hierarchy and easily allow new additions to the structure. Active Directory features and benefits include a flexible hierarchical structure; security delegation; extensibility through object customization; multimaster replication; scalability; support for resource queries via LDAP, DNS, and Dynamic DNS (DDNS) support; programming interfaces through Active Directory Services interface; and interoperability with existing standards-based directories. A Windows 2000 network contrasts largely to legacy Windows NT structures as seen in Figures 1.3 and 1.4. Here are the main points we are going to focus on from a planning and integration perspective: Single point of administration. Because the directory is structured in a hierarchy, and all access to objects is through this hierarchy, the task of administering a Windows 2000 network is much simplified. Support for the new concept of transitive trusts further eases administrative burdens, cutting down on the amount of trust relationships that need to be managed by administrators. A transitive trust means simply that if Domain A trusts Domain B, and Domain C trusts Domain B, then Domain A trusts Domain C. For those of you familiar with trust relationships in the Windows NT 4.0 and 3.x products, this should come as a huge relief. An example of transitive trusts is shown in Figure 1.5.
