They combine the advantages of XRF as an elemental analytical tool with the unique possibilities of SR. Of special signi cance are the new third generation storage rings that are speci cally designed to obtain unprecedented intensity, high radiation energy and brilliance. A number of these are now routinely operational, the ESRF, the Advanced Photon Source (APS, Argonne, USA) and SPring-8 (Harima, Japan) are the most important examples. Compared to earlier second generation rings these SR facilities are characterised by their high energy of 6 to 8 GeV. Signi cant in these devices also is the systematic use of insertion devices that are placed in the straight sections of the storage ring (wigglers and undulators). Wigglers are magnetic structures that create multiple oscillations around the beam path and hence increase both the energy and the intensity of the radiation. Undulators are designed to create smaller and more frequent de ections, giving rise to interference effects and in such conditions the coherent radiation is concentrated around speci c energies. Other newly built SR sources follow the design characteristics of these sources and now commonly include the use of insertion devices (Subchapter 2.2). A double crystal monochromator comprising a pair of crystals is a standard item in most monochromatic -XRF set-ups because the exit direction is kept constant during energy scanning. The energy resolution of the double crystal monochromator is of the order of E/E = 10 4 or less, and this is suf cient for absorption edge applications. In its primary utilisation mode as a tool for elemental analysis by XRF analysis a high photon ux rather than such a high-energy resolution is required and an energy resolution of the order of E/E = 10 2 is suf cient for the purpose. The probability that a call can be placed, and is not blocked, is an important part of service quality: remember that quality of service is de ned as 100% minus the percentage of blocked calls, minus ten times the percentage of lost calls (Section 1.3.7). In an FDMA system, a large system load can lead only to blocked calls, but not lost calls, as long as each user stays in the coverage area of his/her BS (note that in this section, we are neglecting call blocking or dropping due to too-high BER). However, calls can be dropped when a user with an ongoing call tries to move to a different cell whose BS is already fully occupied. And as we will see in Section 17.6, a fully loaded system also increases interference with neighboring cells, making the links in that cell more sensitive to uctuations in signal strength, and possibly increasing the number of dropped calls due to insuf cient Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR). Summarizing, we nd that the number of users that can be accommodated with a given quality of service increases faster than linearly with the number of available speech channels. The difference between actual increase and linear increase is called the trunking gain. From a purely technical point of view, it is thus preferable to have a large pool of speech channels that serves all users. This situation could be ful lled, e.g., were there only a single operator for cellular systems, owning the complete spectrum assigned to cellular services. The reasons for not choosing this approach are political (pricing, monopoly), not technical.2 Example 17.2 In an Erlang-B system, 30 channels are available. I mentioned that this approach isn t perfect because, well, it isn t. If you aggregate all of your e-mail accounts via a single master account on the Web and then confi gure Windows Phone to access only that master e-mail account, the phone will have no idea where mail is coming from and no way to reply using a particular account. If this isn t an issue for you, then go for it. If it is, you ll have to put up with Microsoft s non-unifi ed inbox approach in Windows Phone. Or, optionally, you could see whether the mobile web interface for that master e-mail account works well enough in the phone s browser, Internet Explorer. You could always access your mail from there instead (though in doing so, you d lose out on the notification integration that the Mail app provides).
