Figure 3.16 illustrates the variations in the magnitude of the array factor, a ) ,with -7r 5 @ 5 7r for the case of 2 N 1 = 5 elements and a = f7r/5, *37r/5. The orthogonal beams generated by the beamforming network represent N independent directions, one per beam. 2 Depending on the target direction of interest, a particular beam of the set is identified as the main beam and the remainder are viewed as auxiliary beams. From Figure 3.16 it can be seen that each of the auxiliary beams has a null in the direction of the main beam. Because of the fixed nature of these unweighted beams formed by the fixed beamformers of Figure 3.15, individual beam control requires interpolation between beamsin order to fine-steer the resultant beam and linear combination of auxiliary beams to create nulls in the direction of interfering sources. Alternatively, beam-space beamformingrequires a set of beam-space combiners to generate weighted outputs shown in as Figure 3.15. The Fast Fourier Transform (F) F T block in the diagram generates the orthogonal beams, the process by which this is done is analogous to the performance of an FFT in the time-domain, whereit may be viewed as a bank of non-overlapping narrow-band filters whose passbands span the frequency of interest [247]. Hence, the L point FFT generates L spatially orthogonal beams.

Fig. 7.25 The next map (Fig. 7.25) is relatively simpler, except that it contains two critical points, one of them a source, marked +, from which flow lines only emerge, and the other a sink, marked -, into which flow-lines disappear. This might seem to be a good picture of water flowing out of a tap and down a plug-hole, and indeed it could be, but it is actually a picture of the electric lines of force between the two ends of a magnet, a subject studied by James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79), the great scientist who unified the sciences of optics and electrodynamics by showing that the same differential equations described both. The direction of magnetic lines of force (or other fields of force due to electric currents, or gravity) can be plotted from the differential equations that describe them. From the same differential equations, we can calculate the potential function, and plot the lines of equal potential. It turns out that the equipotential lines (on each of which the potential is constant) are always at right angles to the lines of force, which brings us back to the sets of ellipses and hyperbolas with the same foci (as in Problem 71) which are also mutually perpendicular. These maps were drawn to represent differential equations, but there is nothing to stop the mathematician drawing a map and then looking for an equation to fit it. To illustrate why this might be useful, suppose that a scientist is studying the flow of water past a
