In the U.S. cellular phone system just discussed, there are 832 channels each for transmission and reception. Unfortunately, only 60 of the 832 channels are available to use in each cell. The details of this limitation, which are called frequency reuse, are illustrated in Figure 30.3. (A more appropriate name would be frequency nonuse. ) There are several reasons for it. The band is divided between two service providers, so that only half of the 30 kHz wide channels (416) are available to a given service provider. Figure 30.3 shows a common arrangement of seven hexagonal cells that form a cluster. Several other clusters of seven hexagonal cells are also shown. Only honeybees can make a perfect set of seven hexagonal cells. The cellular phone site designer is limited by topography, licensing, and obtaining property on which to erect a tower. However, the seven hexagonal pattern provides a simple drawing for explaining frequency reuse. As shown by the arrows at the bottom of the gure, if the diameters of the cells are 16 miles, the distance between one seven-cell cluster and the next is about 40 miles. Forty miles is around the curvature of the Earth, so the set of frequencies can be reused by the same or a different service provider to service a different set of users. Referring to the seven-cell cluster at the top of the drawing in Figure 30.3, the star in cell 5 represents a mobile unit, which is assigned one of its 416 RF channels. Assume that the base station in cell 1 is using that same RF frequency for one of the mobile phones in its cell. Which of the RF signals is stronger in the mobile unit receiver that is in cell 5: the signal from the base station in cell 5 that is intended for it or the signal from the base station in cell 1 that is using the same frequency for another user The obvious answer is the signal from the base station in cell 5, because it is closer to the mobile. This answer is statistically true 80% of the time. However, 20% of the time the RF signal from the base station in cell 1 will be larger, because of

The step-scanning method needs time to scan, and thus energy-dispersive geometry is developed to measure the XAFS spectra by one shot as shown in Figure 5.8.33.182 Laboratory EXAFS spectrometers are commercially available183,184 as shown in Figure 5.8.34, which looks like an X-ray diffractometer. The laboratory EXAFS machines use rotating anode high power X-ray tubes such as reported by Sakurai185 and recently a parabolic cylinder mirror has been used.186 The commercially available spectrometers are usually modi ed versions of spectrometers developed in academic institutions.187 189 The specimen in these laboratory XAFS spectrometers is moved with a change in the incident X-ray energy but the X-ray tube is xed. Therefore, complicated experiments using a cryogenic cooler or high temperature furnace are very dif cult to perform. To overcome these dif culties, a new spectrometer where the sample is xed and the X-ray tube moves has been developed.190 A soft X-ray synchrotron beamline for XAFS measurements looks like an electron spectrometer, such as an ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis) instrument. This is because the soft X-ray beamline (less than 1 keV) requires a windowless system due to the strong absorption coef cients of any type of X-ray windows. Therefore the sample chamber is directly connected to the synchrotron main ring without a window. Consequently the samples allowed into the sample chamber are very limited because of the ultra high vacuum system. However, recently using a thin lm such as BN, liquid samples have been measurable191 at ALS (Advanced Light Source).
