One of the strongest reasons in the past for buying Microsoft products relates to the support that the company has maintained for development tools and developers through the years. With the release of the Windows 2000 product and Active Directory, Microsoft has taken this premise a step further with the introduction of ADSI. ADSI is a set of Component Object Model (COM) interfaces that provide developers with a tool to create cross-directory tools. ADSI provides developers with access to multiple DS providers, including Lotus Notes, X.500, NetWare Bindery, and NDS, as well as the Active Directory and legacy NT directory services. Much like the ODBC programming specification, ADSI provides an abstract API to program across directories. Used in conjunction with single sign-on, users may be added to all directories and sign on one time to access resources across the enterprise. Additionally, searching across directories to locate resources is a possibility (see Figure 17.6). From a technical perspective, the client software accesses an object in the namespace via an ADSI/COM interface called a provider. Different providers impart access to different levels of directory objects as well as

Hole Wizard holes use either a 2D or a 3D sketch for the placement of the hole centers. You can define the centers by simply placing and dimensioning sketch points. Starting with SolidWorks 2010, the 2D sketch type is used by default, with the 3D sketch type only being used when you specify it in the Positions tab of the Hole Wizard tool.
