In this section, we present a vision of how to apply autonomic computing to the Grid, and thus develop autonomic Grid systems. As we have outlined in 2, OGSA is the de facto standard for building service-oriented Grid applications. Grid services, in this context are Web services with some extensions to copy dynamic behaviour and the need for state. In the context of the Semantic Grid, Grid services are annotated with metadata and have ontologies to specify their semantic functions and the domain they apply to. The research on the Semantic Grid has been focused on the automatic annotation, enactment, registration and discovery of semantic work ows that are composed from Grid services. At this stage, a Grid service can provide transient and stateful services, and it also has some knowledge about itself, e.g. what kind of input and output it semantically needs, and what kind of domain it applies to. However, it does not have any autonomic features. It is envisioned that a future Grid system will be composed from autonomic Grid services, as shown in Figure 3.18. An autonomic Grid service could have the following components: Core: This is the core component of the service to provide core functionality such as performing a computation. Advertising: The advertising component registers the service name, domain-related problems it could solve with a registry

XML Signature is a W3C Recommendation that provides a means to validate message integrity and nonrepudiation. With XML Signature, any part of an XML document can be digitally signed. In fact, multiple parts of an XML document can be signed by different people or applications. XML Signature, sometimes called XML-DSIG or XML-SIG, relies on public key technology in which the hash (or message digest) of a message is cryptographically signed. Because of the nature of public key signatures, anyone with the signer s digital certificate (or public key) can validate that the signer indeed signed the message, providing legal proof that the signer cannot refute. A trusted third party can look at the message and validate that the message was indeed digitally signed by the sender. A digitally signed message can verify the message s origin and content, which can also serve as authentication of SOAP messages. For example, in Figure 4.9, the user could sign part of the message that is initially sent to the portal and that initially needs to be read by the last Web service. When that part of the message gets to the final Web service, it can validate that the user indeed sent the message. XML digital signatures will play an important role in Web services security. If a Web service sells widgets, and a purchase order for 500 widgets is made, making sure that the message wasn t altered (for example, someone changing the purchase to 5000 widgets) will be important, as will be ensuring that the purchaser digitally signed the purchase order to provide the legal proof. In a purchasing scenario, validating the purchase order will be more important than hiding its contents (with encryption, for example).

On an average day, sellers list millions of items on eBay. The site s thousands of categories range from toys, antiques, furniture, and clothing to big-ticket items like cars and houses. Yes, I did say houses! eBay is global, too. People from all over the world buy and sell on eBay. I ship about 20 percent of the items I sell to foreign countries. eBay has local sites in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and of course the United States. All this can make doing business on eBay sound a bit overwhelming. However, the good news is that small mom-and-pop sellers, people just like you and me, still make up over 90 percent of all transactions on eBay. eBay works hard to keep the small sellers happy.
