that the new person is clear about what they are expected to gain from each part of the programme. With more senior appointments, also consult the new person on what they see as their induction needs. It should be borne in mind that there is a limit to the amount of information that people can take in at one time, and that learning needs to be consolidated by practical application. Rather than devote a concentrated period to induction and then expect the person to retain all the information and signals given to them, it is more effective to intersperse induction sessions through the time that the person spends picking up and getting on with the job. As with any training process, it is important to review outcomes, to nd out how much from the induction is clear and has been retained, and what may need to be gone over again.

Until recently, patients with substance misuse and mental disorders had their two disorders treated separately, when treated at all. These traditional treatment models followed a policy of either sequential or parallel treatment. In sequential treatment, patients rst receive treatment for one disorder, followed by treatment for the other disorder. In the most extreme version of sequential treatment, a disorder that is considered primary is treated initially, and the second is only treated if it does not remit after treatment of the rst. In parallel treatment, patients receive treatment for both disorders simultaneously from different groups of professionals, including specialists in the management of substance misuse and others who treat mental health problems. Both approaches assume that each disorder can be treated in isolation of the other. Sequential treatment assumes an absence of substantial reciprocal interaction between the disorders; parallel treatment assumes an absence of problematic interactions between treatments. By the late 1980s, problems with traditional approaches to treating comorbid substance abuse and mental disorders were widely recognized and their ineffectiveness was broadly accepted at least in the case of comorbidity with severe mental disorders (Polcin, 1992; Ridgely, Goldman & Willenbring, 1990). The separation of mental health and substance abuse treatment resulted in many patients never receiving services for one of their comorbid disorders, due to restrictive eligibility criteria or inadequate detection or management by the treatment provider. Sequential treatment approaches tend to be ineffective because signi cant comorbid disorders tend to have a web of reciprocal in uence that makes the treatment of one disorder in isolation dif cult. Parallel treatment approaches are problematic because different treatment providers usually fail to integrate their interventions, which can result in contradictory or incompatible treatments (e.g. the use of strong interpersonal confrontation is favored by some substance misuse professionals, but eschewed by most professionals who treat severe mental disorders). In addition, de ciencies in communication between the therapists who are involved in parallel treatment present substantial problems for patient management, especially when these therapists work in different agencies (Kavanagh et al., 2000). The recognition of problems with traditional approaches to dual diagnosis treatment has led to the development of integrated treatment models for severe mental disorders and substance misuse (Drake et al., 1991; Kavanagh, 1995; Minkoff, 1989; Mueser et al., 2003; Rosenthal, Hellerstein & Miner, 1992a). At the core of integrated treatment models is the assumption that the same clinician or team of clinicians treats both the mental disorders and the substance misuse simultaneously. When deciding whether an intervention is appropriate at a particular stage, clinicians working within this approach take into account the total picture of symptoms, cognitive abilities and context, rather than focusing on progress within a single problem dimension.

P r o c e d u r e Wash the watercress and separate the leaves from the stems. Set some of the nicer leaves aside for the garnish. Coarsely chop the stems and set aside. Quickly blanch the leaves in boiling salted water and refresh. Once completely cooled, drain. Squeeze out any excess water and nely chop. Thinly slice the leeks and sweat in butter with the watercress stems. Gently cook until tender and all the liquid has evaporated. Add the chicken stock or water and the potatoes. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Add the cream, then add the blanched watercress. Blend in a blender until smooth, then strain. Season to taste. Serve in a shallow soup bowl and garnish with fresh watercress leaves. This soup can also be served cold.

ell, it s not a coffee maker, if that s what you were thinking. Java is a programming language often used with Internet programs and applets (small programs embedded in Web pages). The virtual machine (also called a runtime environment) allows those programs to run on your computer. It s not a mandatory item, unless you use programs that require it or visit Web sites that require it. Typically, if you needed the Java virtual machine, you d be prompted to download it automatically when it s required. You can also download and install it at any time from www.java.com/download. Or if that link doesn t work, try http://sun.java.com.

Keys define the main animation points in an animation. Max interpolates all the positions and values between the key points to generate the animation. Using the Track View, you can edit these animation keys with precision. Keys can be edited in either layout, but are probably easiest to edit in the Dope Sheet layout with the Edit Keys button enabled.

Selecting a field from the drop-down list in the field cell first adds the table s name, followed by a period and the field name. For example, the ProductID in tblSalesLineItems is displayed as tblSalesLineItems.ProductID. This helps you select the correct field name. Using this method, you can select a common field name from a specific table.

must go for it. Taking risks means that you answer each and every question to the best of your ability. If that means guessing on a question, then so be it. It is what you must do to earn points. You have no chance of earning points if you leave a question blank. By answering each and every question, you have a chance to improve your score. Leave nothing blank. The CPA exam is positively graded you earn points by doing. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers. Points are awarded for correct answers. For example, on a communication question, when in doubt, write it down. If the graders don t want the concept, they will ignore it. Stay on topic and write it! USE YOUR FAVORITE RELAXATION TECHNIQUES Performers and athletes often go to a corner and meditate or pray before an important event. Others listen to their favorite music. Some might call friends or family to talk about something other than the event coming up. Before exam day, think about your personal relaxation techniques. What works for you Maybe your favorite relaxation technique is to sit in a bubble bath and read. Obviously you can t take the exam while bathing. Take a bubble bath the night before. Close your eyes and think about the task at hand. Reflect on what you know. Ignore what you don t know. It s too late to learn new material at this point. You have reached the final stretch. Don t schedule an outing for the night before the exam. To calm your nerves, you must remain focused on the next day s task. Don t schedule a massage for the morning before the exam. You might become so relaxed that you fall asleep during the exam. Schedule a massage the night before the exam to help you sleep. Get a manicure or a pedicure. Do simple activities by yourself. Give yourself time to visualize what you must do. Friends, family, and coworkers might irritate you by their lack of understanding about what it is that you must do. Others tend to oversimplify the process because they don t understand the difficulty of this exam. You will remain calmer if you are by yourself. Keep your relaxation techniques simple on the day of the exam. Some suggestions are Chew gum. Play your favorite music on the way to the Prometric center. Close your eyes and picture a tranquil scene, such as a waterfall with gentle rolling water. Do some jumping jacks. Go outside and breathe in the fresh air; listen to the birds singing. Give yourself a pat on the back; you have done your best. Smile at your reflection in the mirror. Take deep breaths.
