To understand what a firewall is, you need to first understand what a network connection is. Even though you have only one skinny wire connecting your computer to the Internet (through a phone line or cable outlet), that connection actually consists of 65,535 ports. Each port can simultaneously carry on its own conversation with the outside world. So, theoretically, you could have 65,535 things going on at a time. But of course, nobody ever has that much going on all at once. One, or maybe a few ports, is more like it. The ports are divided into two categories: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol). TCP is generally used to send text and pictures (Web pages and e-mail), and includes some error checking to make sure all the information that s received by a computer matches what the sending computer sent. UDP works more like broadcast TV or radio, where the information is just sent out and there is no error checking. UDP is generally used for real-time communications, such as voice conversations and radio broadcasts sent over the Net.

EXERCISES TO CHAPTER 4 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 4.5 Implement a lexical analyzer for Pascal in C#, including lookAhead and stepBack routines. Continue the work of Exercise 4.1 to develop a recursive descent parser for a subset of Pascal, at least, for its statements. Correct the grammar in the example in Section 4.3 to allow a shift reduce parser to work correctly. Investigate the grammar of C# and explain why it is not SLR. Construct the canonical collection of sets of LR(0) items for the grammar of expressions de ned in the examples to this chapter.

the synoptic gospels picture of Jesus as a human messiah. Paul s letters, written in the 50s CE, are our earliest writings from a follower of Jesus. Of all the events in Jesus life, Paul mentions only the crucifixion. He may have had strategic reasons for passing over Jesus earthly career: unlike many of his apostolic competitors, he had not known Jesus during his lifetime. Still, as the Parables attests, Paul was not the first Jew to understand the messiah as a heavenly being. Indeed, Paul s picture of Christ has a great deal in common with the picture of the chosen one in the Parables and the messiah in 4 Ezra. Like them, Christ is responsible for the defeat of the wicked: Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and every power (1 Cor. 15:24). And, like the chosen one, Christ is also the eschatological judge: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body (2 Cor. 5:10; see also Rom. 2:16). Like Paul, John was little interested in the earthly Jesus. The only clear allusion to the life of Jesus in Revelation is a reference to the crucifixion (Rev. 11:8), the same event that figures in Paul s letters. Indeed, the dominant image of Christ in the book of Revelation is not of a figure in human form but of a lamb that has been slain, with seven horns and seven eyes, an image that reflects the centrality of Christ s sacrifice in John s thought. Like the Parables of Enoch, Revelation consists of a series of scenes that the visionary sees taking place in heaven. In Revelation, however, the visionary remains on earth, watching events unfold in heaven through an open door (Rev. 4:1). The events take place against the background of the liturgy of the heavenly temple, to be discussed in the next chapter. The eschatological drama begins after the death of the Lamb, or, in Revelation s description, his triumph (Rev. 5:5), that permits him to open the seven seals of a scroll of eschatological woes. As each seal is broken, another calamity or set of calamities, such as warfare, famine, and natural disasters, is unleashed on earth (Rev. 6 10). These calamities afflict all mankind, with no distinction between righteous and wicked.
